The earliest of these sermons were delivered in Lee, MA in 1803, and the bulk were delivered in Ashfield (west of Deerfield) from 1808 to 1813, with others preached in the nearby towns of Vermont and western Massachusetts. This matches the career path of the Rev. Alvan Sanderson (1780-1817), who graduated from Williams College in 1802, studied theology at Lee, came to the Congregational Church in Ashfield in 1808, and stopped preaching in 1814 due to tuberculosis. He later founded the Sanderson Academy in Ashfield.
